Below is the summary of responsibilities for this role; however, this list is not all inclusive:

Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Day Programs and the Program Manager, the Instructor/Senior Companion instructs adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in activities designed to promote vocational, social, physical, and intellectual growth by performing required duties. The ideal candidates for this position are individuals who are caring and patient, but are also able to take charge when needed.

The position requires individuals who are not only empathetic, but also proficient at multi-tasking, using electronic devices for reporting, and have the ability and willingness to address mobility, hygiene, and general life skills. The Instructor/Senior Companion must be professional, responsible and able to handle a variety of situations, including but not limited to the following:

  • Charting daily on participant activities and potentially handling the distribution of money and medication
  • Preparing and reviewing daily/weekly activity plans with the participants, allowing them to choose activities that are not only educational and community oriented, but fun and social as well
  • Completing daily destination sheets before leaving for a community outing and checks out daily materials, i.e., backpacks, first aid kit, emergency paperwork and money, participant funds as needed, and progress notes
  • Coordinating activities and transportation needs for participants under the guidance of the Program Specialist

The work schedule is Monday – Friday with some flexible hours (due to COVID), however, most hours will fall in between 7:00am and 4:30pm. Candidate must be 21 years old, have at least three (3) years of driving experience with a clean DMV record for insurance purposes. Ability to drive company vehicles and/or use public transportation is a must. Candidate must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen; DOJ/FBI fingerprint scan and pre-employment physical and TB test due to program licensing. Interested candidates must have a high school diploma or GED (minimum requirement). Associate of Arts degree in a related field is preferred but not required. Sufficient experience (1 year) working with adults with developmental disabilities and/or experience in customer service (1 year) to carry out duties required in job description. Any combination of education and/or experience will be considered for this position.
