Getting to Know Board Member: Hilma Thomas

Continuing on with the “Getting to know the Anthesis Board” series, our dedicated volunteers who lead Anthesis in our mission to support independent and inclusive lives for adults with [dis]abilities through employment and community integration will continue to be introduced. From the previous post featuring Board Member, Yi Eubanks, this post will be featuring board member, Hilma Thomas.

Q: How did you first learn about Anthesis? How long have you been with Anthesis?

A: I learned about Anthesis through my employer, Chaffey FCU.  Anthesis is a Select Employer Group that has established a relation with Chaffey.  Throughout the years, Chaffey has donated and/or participated with fundraising events such as the walk/run and annual dinner.  I first learned about Anthesis in 2018 when I coordinated the run/walk participation for Chaffey’s staff.

Q: Why did you decide to join the Anthesis Board?

A: After participating in the walk/run in 2018, I decided to join the Anthesis Run/Walk Committee and after serving in the committee for about 1 year, I was invited to join Anthesis Board.  I thought it was a good opportunity to get more involved with a non-profit organization and learn more about Anthesis.

Q: What do you enjoy most about volunteering with Anthesis?

A: I am still very new to all that Anthesis does; however, hearing the various success stories of Anthesis Participants is wonderful.  I happy to know that I serve in an organization that advocates for people with disabilities.

Q: What is your current occupation (or what position did you retire from)?

A: I currently work for Chaffey FCU as Accounting and Support Services Manager.

Q: Favorite accomplishment?

A: Being a role model to the younger generation, especially my kids.  I feel getting involved in the community is very important and we could all make a difference in the world.

Q: How do you prefer to spend your free time?

A: I truly enjoy spending time with my family.  I love the outdoors, so taking bike rides, hiking, going to the beach, watching my kids play sports or even a drive to the beach or mountains always much fun.

Q: Where did you grow-up? What makes it unique? Where is home now?

A: I grow up in Eagle Rock (part of Los Angeles).  I currently live in Upland, CA.  Not too sure what makes me unique, I have been complemented throughout the years with people saying that I have a very calm personality willing to hear what others have to say.  I grew up with a single mother where we experienced financial challenges.  I am blessed and life has changed.  The opportunities that my kids now have are very different to what I had as child.  One of my goals is to always remain humble and look for opportunities to help those in need.

Q: What is an interesting fact about yourself?

A: I trusted behind the wheel at 10 years old, so I have many years of driving experience.

Q: What skills/expertise do you bring to the Anthesis Board?

A: I am a servant leader as well as a team player; therefore, Anthesis Board could count on me on wherever I am needed.

Q:  What is something you wish the public knew about the participants that Anthesis serves?

A: The participants of Anthesis along with their loved ones are people who strive to live their lives to the fullest.  Behind every face is a heart and a story.  Anthesis staff work hard to make each of their participants a successful story.  Every participant deserves the opportunity to feel like they belong.
